I enjoy Salvatore's writing, it does not require much thought or effort to read his books, which make them easy to just sit back and relish them. They are a simple and easy read. I have to say that I am not too excited about this series however. The same villians just keep coming back. Don't you have any new contendors for the Drow or do you have to keep recycling the same old bad guys again and again.
Dont get me wrong I like Entreri, but at times I can't help but think that his time has past. I am sure Salvatore is going to keep resurrecting this character again and again, and eventually try to get us to see a good side to him just as they do in that silly "Heroes" tv show.
I will keep reading the series, but out of enjoyment of action, and will try not to get bored with the same old sequences and characters again and again. May 15, P. Aaron Potter rated it liked it Shelves: fantasy. Here's a conundrum: how to write a review for a book that you finished only a few months ago, but have forgotten so entirely that you can't actually remember even a little of what it was about?
I have a fine memory for detail and actually enjoy this particular author, often quite a bit. When he's writing well, Salvatore still misses greatness, but he can pen as good a potboiler as anyone, and really, who needs a steady diet of Faulkner?
When you're eating popcorn, it should taste like popcorn, no Here's a conundrum: how to write a review for a book that you finished only a few months ago, but have forgotten so entirely that you can't actually remember even a little of what it was about? When you're eating popcorn, it should taste like popcorn, not filet mignon. So why can't I remember any of this? The Smartest Person in the World, who reads a crapton more books than I do, is always a little impressed by my ability to dredge up even minor plot points from my reading of years and years back.
So why can't I recall any of this? Not where it goes in the Drizzt canon, not which characters are central to the plot, not even which ones are alive? I mean, I know it's a Drizzt book because a he's on the cover and b c'mon, it's R.
Was it really that unmemorable? Not even enough to like or loathe it strongly enough to do anything but have tossed it into my 'to be reviewed' pile? That much a cipher? Isn't that a kind of damning evaluation in and of itself? I think I figured out the answer to my initial conundrum.
This book feels like a one big filler, I don't even know why. It just plods along, there's no big climax or anything. It's a good book but, I don't know, the spark's missing, I guess. Also, what really irked me was how Drizzt and Catti-brie, mostly it was those two, were all about how they wanted to give Wulfgar time and space to get better - and at the same time they kept nagging and nagging, wan This book feels like a one big filler, I don't even know why.
I was all WHAT? And the last straw? They can't do any wrong, they are wise and serene and so zen! Jul 06, Jeremy Stephens rated it liked it Shelves: books-of I would like to start off by saying that I'm tired of Drizzt Do'urden.
He was cool for about the first seven or eight books in which he appeared but as the series goes on he has become a rather repetitive and boring character. Years ago I found myself enthralled by the many fight scenes in which he goes around slaughtering orcs, goblins or whatever else with his mighty scimitars but it has gotten to the point now to where such scenes are so common place and repetitive that they seem like filler I would like to start off by saying that I'm tired of Drizzt Do'urden.
Years ago I found myself enthralled by the many fight scenes in which he goes around slaughtering orcs, goblins or whatever else with his mighty scimitars but it has gotten to the point now to where such scenes are so common place and repetitive that they seem like filler to make for a longer book.
At one point while reading this, I realized I was speed reading through most of the parts dealing with Drizzt so I could get to the more interesting parts about Entreri or Wulfgar. Compared to other books in this series, Artemis Entreri and Wulfgar come off as being the more complex characters due to Wulfgar's struggles with PTSD and Entreri's own depression and struggles with identity.
It is a book that is worth reading for those who have read Salvatore's other Forgotten Realms novels but overall, it is far from the best in the series and so only deserves a three star rating.
I feel sooo bad. But I am just not in the mood for this book. I have about 80 pages left but am going to give up and move onto another book. When I jump on the Drizzt bandwagon again I will just skip this one.
With 80 pages left I simply look up what ends up happening. This book is all filler and I can't take it! Jul 01, Nikky3 rated it liked it. These books realy were never ment for me. I enjoyed milking the drama to my co-workers but I think me and Drizzit need to see other people.
My previous review of this book put it in a more favorable light, but now that I've had some time to really think it over, I'm changing some things. The ending was really good, so I think that was the only thing I was remembering about when I wrote my first review. Salvatore continues to be an interesting and original writer despite the fact that this is the 11th book about the same character. His writing style is quick and easy to understand, without being unclear, and his combat scenes ar My previous review of this book put it in a more favorable light, but now that I've had some time to really think it over, I'm changing some things.
His writing style is quick and easy to understand, without being unclear, and his combat scenes are downright masterful. I'd have given most of his past books 4 or 5 stars, but this one had a depressing side story about the downfall of Wulfgar, a previous good character, into sexual sin and drunkenness. I don't doubt that he will eventually snap out of it, but that doesn't make it any more pleasant to read.
This one was much less clean than some Salvatore's previous books. This is the only real problem I had with this book, but it was big enough to sour the book in some ways.
The other problem I had with this one was that there were essentially three plot lines that had little to do with each other. Two of them were quite good, but they were all oddly detached.
I liked the stories about Drizzt and Entreri so that wasn't a big problem, but again Wulfgar's just bummed me out. If you've read the series up to this book, go ahead and read it. It was still a good book, but I'd have to think carefully before letting someone borrow this one. Despite the mentioned problems, this was a satisfying continuation of the plot. It doesn't technically leave you hanging, but there is a lot of intriguing material for the next book in the series.
Dec 26, Ricky Ganci rated it really liked it. Again we have a distant and vaguely-promised hook-up between Drizzt and Catti-brie, but whatever—Salvatore will get us there when he feels like it, I guess. Drizzt just kicks so much butt, all the time. Oct 21, Fantasy Literature rated it liked it.
The plot is tighter, the characterization is subtler, and — stressing this point most of all — the prose has taken leaps and bounds forward.
Previously, on Drizzt and Friends, the demon Errtu finally! Dec 31, Paulo "paper books always" Carvalho rated it liked it Shelves: forgotten-realms. This is a bad book in my opinion. This is a filler in my opinion. A repetitive book with everything that happened in other books.
More of Drizzt self introspection. I stopped reading for several months, a year a I guess, until I had the mental strenght to come back and finish reading. This book is only valuable because of Entreri. This book made me get away from the Realms. I want to return and probably will with the War of Spider Queen. I really hope it's better written by other writers.
I have This is a bad book in my opinion. I have bought each and Drizzt stories until Companions because I believe Salvatore can salvage himself. He has created a great character. I really hope he returns to his former self. Jun 15, Priest Apostate rated it it was amazing. Salvatore doesn't disappoint - he still seemlessly develops the characters making sure to portray them in all their glory or tragedy , injects some decent amounts of introspection from Drizzt's perspective which still acts as a profound observation into the human condition , and of course, definitely brings the action.
Oct 06, Nathan rated it it was amazing. Amazing book, well writen, always surprising you in new ways in the wonderful world they put the characters in. A band of friends set out on a journey to destroy Crenchinibon, a corrupting crystal with dark magics trapped inside. Jan 07, Matthew rated it it was amazing.
Salvatore returns us to the adventures of Drizzt and his companions. This series starts off with some dark tones hinting at what the future holds. This could be a grim tale for the companions, as seen by Wulfgar's torment. This book was fantastic and brought back many of the characters I really enjoyed reading about in the previous books.
